Pitstop in KL

24 hours after leaving Camps Bay, we arrived on Wednesday afternoon to a warm welcome at the Hagger household in Kuala Lumpur.  Hot, sweaty, tired and jetlagged, it was so good to be greeted by good friends, who, over the next 36 hours offered us bed, showers, food, drink, great company, laundry service, driver and unlimited WiFi! 

We were incredibly grateful for all, particularly as we'll be without the latter for most of the next 10 days in Borneo, and due to the fact that I managed to lose my wallet somewhere between Cape Town, Dubai and KL.  Too boring to get into the details, but as you can imagine, it took most of the day, a number of phone calls and a fair bit of creativity to arrange for replacement cards to be sent to New Zealand for pickup.  Anyway, got it all sorted thanks to Su and Stevo's generosity and patience.

Finally, yesterday afternoon we got out for a local jungle walk with Su and the kids: Ben, Georgina (my goddaughter) and Jasper.  We went out following an hour's downpour so not only did we encounter lots of frogs and spiders, but leeches too. With one or two early catches en route, we thought we'd all escaped the little blood suckers, until we arrived home, and on removing his socks, Ben's friend Adam found a large black squidgy thing attached. All a bit yucky and fascinating at the same time.

Lovely dinner en famille and early to bed, as we have an early start tomorrow - off to Borneo.

Curtains on The Cape (for us)

Still on the flight from Cape Town to Dubai, I'm on a roll.  We land in Dubai at half past midnight and our connecting flight to Kuala Lumpur is at 3am or so.  It's the worst connection we have on the entire trip, and so I might as well use this flight to write my last post on the South Africa portion of our journey.  I certainly won't want to be typing on the next leg. Our last 2 days in The Cape were mixed - for me at least.  We did fantastic things, but I'll admit right now to the fact that my back has been giving me trouble on and off since we got here. Of Gods and Mountains

Mount Kinabalu The past 2 days were the most difficult of our trip so far.  But that's what we expected.  We planned to climb Mount Kinabalu, the highest  mountain not only in Borneo but in the whole of South East Asia. Fook Yuen breakfast We were picked up early from Hotel Sixty3, by Reynold, our KK area guide for the next few days, and Hanifi our driver (Hans for short), after having popped out to one of the local favourite breakfast spots: Fook Yuen.  There wasn't a single item on the self service counter that a bona fide European would have recognised.  Fantastic: we were finally eating like Malays. 😁 Totally yummy,  if a little unorthodox for the only white faces in the joint. From the home of The Lions to Lions Seat

After some last minute 'fear of leaving' nerves (on Ginny's part, not Duncan's) we set off for Gatwick around 6.30pm on Wednesday.  Around the same time the following day, we finally landed at Cape Town International Airport.  Not the fastest way to Cape Town, but beggars can't be choosers and the upside was that we landed the same time as Paula, who we are staying with in CT, on her way back from a work trip to Jo'burg. An hour later and we were sipping wine looking over the ocean in Camps Bay.  Heaven.  And it then dawned on us that our trip has really begun...not only will we be becoming overly familiar with the 567 movies offered on Emirates inflight entertainment, but we are about to have the biggest adventure of our lives.  And the Cape certainly isn't a shabby place to start. :) As we leave for Port Elizabeth tomorrow, we took our one day in Cape Town to climb Lions Head,  blowing away the cobwebs and providing a great antidote to a near back-bre...
